Not one island
The Bahamas is an independent country of more than 700 islands and cays. Cruise itineraries usually touch New Providence (Nassau), a private island, or Grand Bahama — not the Out Islands.
Closest Caribbean-style getaway
Nassau sits about 180 miles from Miami, which is why 3- and 4-night Bahamas cruises are the standard first sailing from Florida.
English and the U.S. dollar
English is official. The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, and USD is used everywhere near the cruise port.
Blue holes and clear water
The islands sit on a shallow limestone bank, which is why the water looks that bright turquoise. Inland blue holes and offshore reefs are the geological calling card.
Independence in 1973
The Bahamas became independent from Britain on 10 July 1973 and remains in the Commonwealth. Pink government buildings in Nassau are a leftover of that colonial capital plan.
Conch is the local staple
Conch salad, cracked conch, and conch fritters are the harbor-side order. Arawak Cay’s fish fry is the usual food excursion if you leave the ship.

- Nassau piers put you in town on foot. Taxis and water taxis handle Paradise Island and farther beaches.
- Private-island days are simpler: stay aboard the line’s setup unless you booked a specialty excursion.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, cash for small vendors, and a dry bag if you tender.
- Weekend ships make Nassau crowded by late morning. Go ashore early or book a ship excursion with a guaranteed return.
